NDP Leadership Proposes Changing O’Canada Lyrics To “Our home and unceded land”

By Ted Morin

Ottawa - After changing the lyrics in 2018 to make the anthem more gender-neutral, NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh has proposed changing the lyrics once again to remove the potentially offensive term "native".

"Originally, we were going to go with 'Our home and unceded Algonquin territory',” states Singh, “But we feel like it just doesn't work rhythmically."

When critics brought up the fact that “not everywhere" is "traditional Algonquin territory" and there are actually hundreds of different indigenous communities and people, Singh stated, "Ya but they're pretty much all the same, you get the gist," demonstrating his party's dedication to research, respect, and understanding of the land they occupy.

The NDP leader continued, “We're hoping that this action speaks volumes about how much we care about the indigenous populations, and that the care we have means that we don't have to actually take any real actions to effect change within those communities."

Prime Minister Trudeau said he would consider the lyric changes so long as it gave him a better chance at re-election. He told The Harold he would review the lyric changes as soon as he finished up all of his pending lawsuits against indigenous communities.
