Eaton Centre To Be Temporarily Relocated To Make Way For Ontario Line

Toronto - The 2024 construction of Ontario Line subway will see some changes to downtown landmarks, including changes to historic landmarks at Queen and University along with the temporary removal of the Eaton Centre.

The 15.6 km line will connect Exhibition Place to the former grounds of the Science Centre via downtown and through Pape Ave. The construction of the Queen stop will require the temporary removal of downtown’s biggest shopping mall, Metrolinx has announced.

Beginning in 2024, crews will begin removing and relocating the over 200,000 square metres of retail space spanning from Dundas down to Queen St. The entire mall, including all 235 vendors currently operating, will be moved to Toronto’s waterfront area east of Jarvis. The mall will maintain its same layout at it’s new location.

The relocation of the Eaton Centre is expected to take approximately 8 months, allowing Metrolinx the month of September to work on the new subway station before pausing construction for winter. Upon completion of construction in 2028, the Eaton Centre will once again be returned to it’s home along Yonge St, costing approximately $50 million.
