Trudeau Announces New Carbon Tax Will Also Apply To Carbonated Beverages

Ottawa - Expect to see a price jump on your refreshing beverages this summer after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the April 1 carbon tax hike will apply to all bubbly drinks as well.

Trudeau’s plan is to tack on an additional $0.50 per can on all soda, beer, and seltzers in order to combat the effects of climate change produced by the carbonation in these products. Kombucha will be exempt from this tax as the effervescence in the product is naturally occurring and sustainable.

Many climate experts are urging Trudeau to reconsider this plan, citing the fact that carbonation is not the same as carbon emission. However the Prime Minister has assured everyone that “making these small sacrifices today will ensure a better future for tomorrow.”

The new tax has been met with opposition from other party members. Conservative leadership contender Pierre Poilievre is calling on Deputy PM Christina Freeland to cancel the tax during the summer months, citing it as the prime time that Canadians rely on refreshing beverages.

Trudeau says he plans to remain steadfast in his campaign against carbon, and will urging other world leaders to begin taxing carbon in all of it’s forms in the upcoming G8 summit.

The carbonation tax set to come into effect by April 1, and Trudeau has stated he has plans to begin taxing carbon monoxide tax by 2025.
