Cineplex Will Now Charge Movie-Goers $0.50 For Each Trailer They Watch
By Scott Slute
Lifestyle - After announcing an online ticket purchase fee, the country’s largest film exhibitor says they’ll be implementing yet another fee for those thinking they could find out what movies were about to be released for free.
The new “Coming Soon” charge will see an extra $0.50 added to tickets per trailer shown before the movie, the company posted in a tweet. Cineplex cites the rising cost of corn kernels due to global food shortages for the new fee.
The amount of trailers played prior to the movie will be at the discretion of the theatre and audience members will have no say in the number shown, so expect ticket prices to rise anywhere from $3 to $27 this summer.
Cineplex says that the nominal fee will help ensure their business continues to provide all the amenities customers have come expect including poorly trained staff, over iced sodas and sticky floors.
Running late to your movie? Well unfortunately for tardy viewers, the fee will still be applied even if you miss the trailers.
“Some of these trailers will be so exciting, like the breathtaking underwater cinematography of Avatar 2, that other people in the theatre are probably going to talk about them. So even if you miss the trailer, you’re going to hear about it. And that’s going to cost you,” Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob warned viewers.
Luckily for movie lovers who want to experience the trailers again and again at home, Cineplex has the solution. By saving their ticket, Cineplex customers can log on to the Cineplex website and watch all the trailers they saw for just $6 per day with the “Coming Soon: To Your Couch” program.
Cineplex says if the Coming Soon program is a success, they are considering putting all the upcoming movie posters into a room in the back and charging customers $5 to look at them.
So get excited to discover what’s coming next, because it will probably be another movie theatre chain!
