Doug Ford Suggests Combating The Housing Crisis By Having Residents Live In Their Cars
Queen’s Park - After expressing his concern over fourplex homes during a meeting on housing, the Ontario Premier has proposed his alternative to solving the growing housing crisis; have residents live in their cars.
“Cars are a great housing alternative for Ontarians. They’re portable, they don’t obstruct the view of neighbouring homes, and they rely on fossil fuel. Folks, I really don’t see a downside here. If you have a flatbed truck, that’s essential the same as a one bedroom condo in downtown Toronto.”
Liberal and NDP initially opposed Ford’s proposition unless more EV charging stations could be built, citing that those living in electric vehicles could end up overstaying at these charging sites. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow pushed back on Ford’s desire for more cars on the road, and instead suggested buses and streetcars would make much better communal homes.
Following the meeting, Ford stated he is pushing the feds for a tax incentive to encourage those who can’t afford homes to by cars instead, with a goal of having at least 20% of Ontario living in “mobile sites” by 2030.
