Op-Ed: Why Our Political System Is Broken But Only When Things Don’t Go My Way
By Gord Turner
Op-Ed - With the announcement of a coalition between the NDP and Liberals, it is very clear to me Canada’s political system is broken because I do not care for this. Not one bit.
Should politicians be able to just do whatever they want if it makes a minority of the country mad? I may not fully understand how parliamentary government works, or understand it at all frankly, but I say no.
This current coalition government is very different from the the 2003 merger between the Progressive Conservatives with the Canadian Alliance, which resulted in a decade of right wing leadership, because this time I don’t like it.
Is it fair that for a third time Justin Trudeau was a elected as the leader of the country by the majority of the population? Of course not! He used to be a drama teacher! Should a free and fair society just allow anyone to be in government? That doesn’t sound very democratic to me.
Our politicians should exclusively be men who look like Michael Douglas in Falling Down and people who wildly exaggerate their military career. Did you know Justin Trudeau used to be a snowboard instructor? Doesn’t sound very Prime Ministery to me.
A democratically elected government aligning itself with another political party that holds views even further from my own is not how politics should work. My vote should mean more than the majority of the country it isn’t fair and I don’t like it.
