Toronto City Council Votes In Favour Of Banning Baseball At All Baseball Diamonds
City Hall - On Friday morning, Toronto’s city council voted 22-4 in favour of banning the playing of baseball at all baseball diamonds across the city over the risks posed by the sport.
In a statement sent to The Toronto Harold, the city explained that due to the high risk associated with the sport of baseball, council had deemed it to be “unsafe”. The city cited the fast moving ball, the dangerous swinging action of the bat, and the extreme risk of sand getting lodged into one’s eye.
“Baseball is one of the only sports where an essential piece of equipment also doubles as a weapon. And if I’m pitching that would make two weapons out there since getting my brown belt in jui jitsu my hands are now legally considered weapons,” explained councillor Josh Matlow.
The ban is set to impact all diamonds in public parks starting April. The ban has already been met with harsh criticism, particularity from middle-aged fathers who say they’ve now lost their one day a week they could get drunk in the park.
