Family Swaps Drawer Filled With Plastic Bags For Drawer Filled With Reusable Bags
Kitchener - As retailers across the country adjust their practices to be more environmentally-conscious, residents have too been making changes. For many households that has meant replacing their drawer filled with harmful plastic bags for a drawer filled with the far more sustainable reusable bags.
The Kent family says that since 2021 they have stopped using plastic bags entirely, and have since made the switch to filling the bottom drawer in their kitchen with hundreds of reusable bags they purchase every time they go grocery shopping.
“At first it was pretty frustrating that our local grocery stores stopped using plastic bags and instead made us purchase the reusable ones every time we shopped,” matriarch Patty Kent tells us, “But we realized that constantly buying reusable bags was just a small inconvenience for us that would make a big impact on stopping pollution and global warming.”
And although the Kent family says they would reuse their disposable plastic bags around the house, they are finding that the reusable bags can work just as well. From carrying things to using them as makeshift garbage bags, they’re learning that reusable bags are just as versatile as their disposable counterparts.
“Every Wednesday night I will go around the house and empty all the bathroom garbages into one of these reusable Farm Boy bags and throw it out on the curb with the rest of our garbage,” 16 year old Holly Kent tells us, “It feels good knowing I’m throwing out a reusable bag instead of using one of those harmful plastic bags.”
And the reusable bags even helped in the disposal of the plastic bags, as the bags once found in the bottom drawer have now all been moved to inside of a reusable bag in the pantry.
